"Etiquette"
Can the woman
ask the man? Is it OK to dance one or two
dances, not the whole set? There are many
customs, which vary by community and are
described on various websites. For me, it
comes down to...
...compassion
-
Learning and dancing tango helps us find
ourselves, express ourselves, and connect
with others. It can be personal and intense,
so we need to respect people's boundaries.
And it can be a vulnerable experience -- so
bring your empathy as well as your dance
shoes. Beyond that, the rules I value
most are:
Respect
other dancers' space -
Leaders, learn the rules of the road so you
don't bump other dancers.
Don't
teach on the dance floor -
At the dance, please don't correct your
partner or tell them how to do a step. It
suggests the step is more important than
their enjoyment of the dance. Save your
feedback for the practica, where we can give
constructive criticism in a supportive way.
And it really does take two to tango -
could the issue be with your own technique?
Safe
tango -
Tango is a close dance - let's keep each
other healthy! If you're coming down
with a cold, the flu, have a skin lesion, or anything else that may be
contagious, please stay home and get better.
